Carol McNaughton established the Practice in 1989. She has
over 30 years of experience in the treatment of sports injuries, spinal and musculoskeletal conditions and injuries and has worked in Edinburgh,
Glasgow and Auckland, New Zealand.
Carol has always had a passion and interest in orthopaedic, spinal and sports injuries.

Her vast experience has included working at the first sports injury clinic at Meadowbank, on site physiotherapist at rugby matches and national squash matches to involvement with physiotherapy cover for the Commonwealth Games, Edinburgh.
In the orthopaedic hospital environment she worked closely with orthopaedic surgeons in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients after joint replacement and spinal surgery, and with children with scoliosis and congenital hip dysplasia conditions.
In 1983 Carol was appointed Superintendent Physiotherapist at the Murrayfield Hospital Edinburgh and in
1989 set up the McNaughton Physiotherapy Clinic. The clinic has had many varied contracts over the years
including rugby clubs, local businesses and GP practices.
Carol has the reputation of being one of the best "hands on" practitioners in Edinburgh continuing in her specialised field
in the treatment of sports, spinal and musculoskeletal injuries. In addition to this Carol also has advanced
training in applied ergonomics.

Gail Lawson graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy from Glasgow Caledonian University in 1998.
She commenced her career working in musculoskeletal settings both in Fife and Edinburgh before moving to the Spire Livingston Clinic in 2004. As part of the team at Livingston Gail specialised in the treatment of back and neck pain using an approach called Active Spine Care. This encompassed both manual therapy as well as gym based rehabilitation and pain management strategies.

In addition to her full time employment Gail was also a member of the medical team at Heart of Midlothian Football Club from 2000-2005. Duties included injury management of the playing staff as well as the provision of pitch side cover for the reserve squad. In her final 2 years at the Riccarton Academy Gail also set up and managed an assessment clinic for the club’s youth players.
In 2006 Gail moved back to Edinburgh to join the McNaughton Physiotherapy Practice on a full time basis. In addition to her Honours degree Gail also has a post graduated qualification in Orthopaedic Medicine and regularly attends professional development courses in order to update her clinical skills.

Alison Downie has a special interest in musculoskeletal medicine and sports injuries.
After graduating in 1989 with a BSc in Physiotherapy she combined full time work in the NHS with private sports injury clinic work. This included attendance as the on-site Physio at international badminton and gymnastic events, district level rugby, and the Millennium Commonwealth Youth Games.

For 10 years she provided physiotherapy cover for professional tennis events in Edinburgh for the Scottish Lawn Tennis Association.
She obtained a post-graduate diploma in Sports Medicine from the University of Wales in 2001.
As well as sports injuries, she has a particular interest in the treatment of spinal pain and pelvic dysfunctions. Treatment techniques used can include joint manipulation and mobilisation, soft tissue techniques, muscle balance work, electrotherapy, and exercise but the emphasis is on education to help prevent a recurrence of the problem.
In addition to her hands on experience, Alison has lectured to both GPs and Physiotherapists on aspects of musculoskeletal medicine including knee and shoulder problems. For several years she wrote a regular article in "MyRace", Scotland's running magazine.

Amy French graduated from the University of the West of England, Bristol in 2004 with a BSc Honors Physiotherapy degree. She started her career in Gloucestershire working in a community setting before moving to Scotland where she worked in the Borders General Hospital for three years as well as working with rugby teams in the area.

She then spent 3 years working in Edinburgh's NHS acute hospitals specialising in musculoskeletal conditions. This included rehabilitating people after joint and soft tissue surgery, treating acute and chronic problems, working in occupational health assisting with return-to-work programmes and site assessments and working in a specialist hand unit. Amy has a special interest in Pilates and trained with the Australian Physiotherapy Pilates institute up to Matwork 3 level. She has been teaching Pilates one to one and in a group setting for several years. She is also trained in acupuncture and is a member of the acupuncture association of physiotherapists.
